Dynamic Metasurface Antennas for 6G Extreme Massive MIMO Communications

Abstract: Next generation wireless base stations and access points will transmit andreceive using extremely massive numbers of antennas. A promising technology forrealizing such massive arrays in a dynamically controllable and scalable mannerwith reduced cost and power consumption utilizes surfaces of radiatingmetamaterial elements, known as metasurfaces. To date, metasurfaces are mainlyconsidered in the context of wireless communications as passive reflectingdevices, aiding conventional transceivers in shaping the propagationenvironment. This article presents an alternative application of metasurfacesfor wireless communications as active reconfigurable antennas with advancedanalog signal processing capabilities for next generation transceivers. Wereview the main characteristics of metasurfaces used for radiation andreception, and analyze their main advantages as well as their effect on theability to reliably communicate in wireless networks. As current studies unveilonly a portion of the potential of metasurfaces, we detail a list of excitingresearch and implementation challenges which arise from the application ofmetasurface antennas for wireless transceivers.
