Abstract: This paper describes our efforts to integrate liberal learning principles in a capstone course within the overwhelmingly career-focused discipline of accountancy. Our approach was based on the belief that business and liberal learning courses are complementary, rather than competitive, elements of a well-rounded education. The ability to deal with ambiguity, for example, or to integrate seemingly unrelated ideas and perspectives helps young people succeed in their chosen fields. We discuss the rationale for creating an accounting capstone course with an emphasis on incorporating a liberal learning philosophy, its implementation, our experience in the classroom, and suggestions for improvement. Overall, the course was a success; however, some modifications could be made that would make the experience a more positive one for both faculty and students.
