Theorization of status distance: Reflection on the micro theory of representativeness and diversity of public organizations

Abstract: By introducing the concept of status distance into the literature of representative bureaucracy and diversity management, this paper puts forward new hypotheses, which can guide the future research of representation and diversity in public organizations. First, consider the tension caused by minority representation between labor force integration and the pressure of minority bureaucrats to actively represent customers, including identity distance. Secondly, in the interaction between bureaucrats and colleagues and citizen customers, the performance of status distance depends on the characteristics of national and organizational environment and the type of service.
