Abstract: This study investigated the possibility of using motivation learning strategy questionnaire (mslq) and language learning strategy scale (SILL) as tools to measure generation 1.5 students; Motivation and the use of language learning strategies. Mslq is particularly interesting because it contains both the basic motivation subscale and the motivation language learning strategy subscale. The participants in this study were 104 1.5 generation Korean immigrant students who were members of the Korean community in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Participants provided general demographic information and completed the two scales in a balanced manner. The results showed that although the contents of the two scales were indeed similar, the scales did not overlap entirely and appeared to measure two discrete indices. Results also indicated that a moderate correlation between MSLQ learning strategies and SILL learning strategies was found as well as between the SILL total score and the MSLQ total score.
