The influence of hope on the average score and retention rate of undergraduate students in the academic probation period

Abstract: This study analyzes the impact of hope on the academic performance and retention rate of 235 students in a private university in Northeast China. Interns participate in a mandatory online course designed to promote academic and non academic skills to improve students GPA and overall retention. The Hope Scale (Snyder et al. (1991)) is used to determine whether students with higher hope will achieve higher academic performance after completing the course. According to the students scores on the instrument, they are divided into high, medium and low hope groups. The results show that students who have completed the course are more likely to be retained than those who have not completed the course, and the average score will improve slightly by the end of this centurymester, and high-hope students showed the greatest overall gain in GPAs.
