Becoming a global citizen through bilingualism: English learning in the life of Chinese College Students

Abstract: The ongoing globalization has led to the great development of English. Since the late 1970s, China has been striving to become a part of the world economy & apos; s. Educating young people to become world citizens fluent in English has always been highly valued. "Becoming a global citizen " means having a strong interest in global issues, cultivating understanding and appreciation of different values, and enhancing national competitiveness; China s competitiveness. However, all these need to be realized through the communication of the world language English. Improving Chinese EFL learners communicative competence depends on how to learn English in the foreign language classroom and how to practice English outside the classroom. Data from English corner, English club and English Church Al show that those informal learning settings have a complentary role to play especially when the formal English classroom is found having various deficits. Data also confirm that informal settings offer the opportunity to close the gap between L1 and L2 learning processes, and nurtutre learners' communicative competence through social intercourse and intercultural exchanges. Moreover, EFL learning is inherently intercultural, which facilitate cross cultural perspectives through bilingualism and bridges over the indigenous cultural traditions and the western democratic values.
