Management problems in Greek middle schools: self-evaluation of the role of Principals

Abstract: This study investigated the importance of principals to some activities related to the effective performance of their duties. The purpose of this recording is to examine the potential of these principals to play their role and work in the highly bureaucratic and hierarchical Greek education system. These activities include (a) establishing and realizing the common vision and mission of the school unit, as well as its cultural identity and formation, (b) student teaching and counseling, (c) the management and development of educators, (d) managing administrative affairs and resources, and (E) maintaining good relations with parents, school external environmental entities and local communities. Research findingsheadmasters consider activities concerning their bureaucratic conductive role as well as their leading behaviour as “very important” at very high percentages (over 70.0 ). However, tasks involving them in administrative issues are, according to them, “less” up to “least important” so that their role is effectively fulfilled. Statistically significant diversifications have been observed in certain activities associated with the efficient performance of their duties in relation to their gender, years of experience in leadership position, and the size of the school unit.
