Abstract: This study aims to explore the understanding of basic genetic concepts among students aged 16-19, which is of great significance for developing the conceptual understanding of genetic related phenomena. A cross-border descriptive study was used to explore the understanding of genetics by British and Turkish students. The data were collected by the two-tier selection diagnostic tool, the two-tier genetic concept test, which requires students to prove that their choice is correct by giving reasons. The results show that there are some differences in the understanding of basic concepts of genetics between British students and Turkish students; However, there are some significant similarities between the alternative concepts held by TW students samples. The common alternative conceptions seen in both of the groups indicate that understanding the concepts occurred regardless of contextual factors. Nevertheless different proportions of the common alternative conceptions and different levels of understanding suggest that conceptualisations develop under the influence of different educational contexts.
