What promotes gender equality in secondary education? Evidence from 57 developing countries, 1970-2010

Abstract: Despite global efforts to expand women s educational opportunities, gender inequality still exists in many developing countries. In response to the root causes of gender inequality in secondary education, we ask whether this inequality persists because of low national capacity or willingness. Based on the gender and age education achievement data of 57 developing countries from 1970 to 2010, our analysis shows that the willingness factor is very important to understand gender equality in Education: countries with racial heterogeneity and countries with Islam as the main religion have a low degree of equality. However, key competency factors such as national income level are not related to gender differences in education.
