Measurement of scoring scale in multiple-choice test: a preliminary study of Pharmacology

Abstract: Multiple choice questions are widely used in clinical teaching. Usually, students must choose the only correct answer from five alternatives. Here, in a voluntary examination, at the end of the mandatory pharmacology examination, we tested a form in which more than one choice may be correct (students from the three-year group). In addition, students were asked to rate each item. The students don t know how many correct answers are in the question. Finally, compared with one fifth of the tests, a questionnaire on the difficulty of the new test must be completed. In the mandatory final exam, all groups performed similarly. From the results, we conclude that the new scoring scale is a better challenge and can be used to evaluate students knowledge and Cnfidence in more depth than previous multiple-choice questions.
