Structural model of students' interest in mathematics learning and self motivation

Abstract: Students began to realize that mathematics is abstract, so learning mathematics is of no benefit to them. As their attitude towards mathematical modeling and their interest in mathematics are affected by this automatically generated perception, they may no longer appreciate the beauty of mathematics. In this paper, structural equation model (SEM) is used to study the variables affecting students learning interest, including students confidence and motivation. The above variables are conceptualized as having a direct impact on students mathematical interest, while mathematical anxiety and students knowledge of mathematical usefulness are conceptualized as having an indirect impact on their mathematical interesttudents’ confidence and motivation. The result showed that significantly students’ confidence directly affects students’ interest in the learning of mathematics and there is a direct relationship between confidence and motivation. A student’s knowledge about the usefulness of mathematics indirectly increases the student’s interest in mathematics.
