Abstract: Manipulators are concrete or virtual objects (such as blocks and chips), which are usually used in primary school to illustrate abstract mathematical concepts. We conducted a systematic review to examine the impact of operator provided interventions on the learning of children with mathematical learning disabilities (MLD). The results observed in the sample (n   =   38) learn, maintain and migrate in various mathematical fields. Interventions using manipulation have been reported to be effective for a range of learning objectives, such as conceptual understanding and computational fluency, but some methodological weaknesses have been observed. The analysis also emphasized the significant heterogeneity of participant characteristics and intervention methods in the studys, and methodology. We discuss overall effects of interventions with manipulatives in the MLD population, the methodological quality across the sample, and implications for practice.
