Views of scientists and stereotypes through the eyes of school-age children

Abstract: The purpose of the current study is to use the scientist drawing test (DAST) to investigate children s performance towards scientists. Participants () were Romanian school-age children in grades 3, 4 and 5 in rural and urban public schools. The results show that most children show the stereotyped characteristics of scientists in painting. For example, white men wearing laboratory coats use instruments reflecting the chemistry laboratory. The results also show that there are statistically significant differences in the scores of stereotyped indicators in students grade level. In addition, the students who visited the science museum scored significantly higher on the stereotype index than the students who said in the survey that they had not visited the science museum museums. Findings are discussed in relationship with students’ views about scientists and their understanding of science.
