Learning mathematics in a metacognitive ICT learning environment: a systematic review of the literature

Abstract: This paper systematically reviews the research on ICT based metacognitive oriented K-12 mathematics education and learning environment. Firstly, this paper briefly reviews the research status of metacognition and mathematics education, information and communication technology and mathematics education. Based on the systematic screening of the databases web of science and Eric, which combines the three elements of ICT based learning environment, metacognitive teaching method and mathematics, 22 articles studies were retrieved and distributed at different educational levels (kindergartens, primary schools and middle schools). The review revealed various studies, especially intervention studies, located in primary and secondary schools. Most studies involve training and practice software and intelligent tutorsng systems, serious games, multimedia environments, and computer-supported collaborative learning environments, with metacognitive pedagogies either integrated into the ICT software itself or provided externally by the teacher, mainly for arithmetic or algebraic word problem-solving but also related to other mathematical topics. All studies reported positive effects on mathematical and or metacognitive learning outcomes. This review ends with a discussion of issues for further theoretical reflection and empirical research.
