Using the pre class formative written test in pharmacology class can greatly improve the performance of medical students in the final written summary test

Abstract: We want to test the progress of medical students in the pharmacology course of our university. Formal teaching is taught to the whole class. Before and after a semester of basic pharmacology course, we conducted the same written examination of multiple-choice questions (single best choice) for third grade medical students. 79 of qualified students (n   =   one week before the pharmacology lecture. Define the pass score of 60 correct answers, and only 2 of students passed the test. The range is between 5 and 21. All students (n  ) this semester=179) and was passed by 95 , of students, again defined by the same passing score. Here, the points obtained ranged from 12 to 29. Over the time of the semester, the attendance in the lectures dropped dramatically to less than 10 of the students. Hence, progress tests are useful, but they hardly measure the gain in knowledge through attendance in the pharmacology lecture (the intervention); they also measure other sources of knowledge, such as textbook reading or memorizing only the initial questions and looking up the answers.
