Using peer counseling to improve students' academic performance of financial accounting concepts

Abstract: This study investigates the effectiveness of peer counseling teaching strategies in improving students academic performance of financial accounting concepts. Quasi experimental design of non randomized pre-test and post-test control group   ×  2.  ×   3. Factor matrix is adopted. The research sample includes 137 students purposefully selected from eight complete classes of middle schools in southern Nigeria. The experimental group used peer counseling teaching strategy, while the control group used traditional teaching methods. This study uses teachers teaching guidelines on peer counseling, conventional methods and financial accounting achievement test to collect data. The results show that peer counseling teaching strategies are more effective in senior high school English teachingproving students’ academic achievement in financial accounting concepts than the conventional lecture method. The outcome of this study also shows that the experimental strategy was not sensitive to gender but sensitive to socioeconomic status. Sequel to this finding, the study recommends that post-basic school teachers should make use of the peer tutoring instructional strategy to present financial accounting lessons in secondary schools to advance students’ attainment in the subject.
