Academic achievement assessment of K-12 students in the Philippines: standardized assessment method

Abstract: With the continuous progress of technology, the demand for industries with skilled and fully equipped labor force is also increasing accordingly. Although many countries around the world have solved the matching problem between academic curriculum and industry needs through initiatives such as K-12 education system, some countries such as the Philippines have only begun to adopt it. During the early adoption of K-12 education system in the Philippines, people raised some concerns about its implementation, mainly because the courses provided by K-12 education institutions in the Philippines did not match the needs of the industry. With these results, it is necessary to determine the status of the Philippine K-12 education system. This paper attempts to clarify these concernsby evaluating the performance of the K-12 students using a standardized approach. The Scholastic Abilities Test for Adults, a standardized test for measuring the academic competence of adults, is used in this study to measure scholastic abilities. The descriptive analyses made in this paper may aid in the development of more robust strategy frameworks for positioning the current K-12 educational system to global and industry demands. Moreover, the results obtained in this study would aid stakeholders in overseeing strategies that would address current gaps in the K-12 educational system of the country.
