Abstract: Research paper abstracts play an important role in determining the fate of academic papers. Although a lot of research has been done on the general structure of this academic genre, the change of movement mode between the two sites does not seem to be affected in one research field. The current research attempts to explore the component movement and movement mode of RA abstracts published in local (Iranian academic English journal) and international (Academic English journal) journals in the field of Applied Linguistics. According to the five step model of Hyland (2000), the RA summary is analyzed. The results show that the abstracts published in both journals contain traditional actions. In addition, mostfrequent moves were the purpose, method, and product in the two corpora. Moreover, although the results of the chi-square test pointed to no significant difference in terms of the frequency of the moves in the abstracts, the analysis divulged variations in the move patterns across the two sets of articles. The findings carry pedagogical implications for the academic writing course designers, materials developers, and instructors to enhance the novice researchers’ familiarity with the writing conventions to facilitate their accommodation by the scientific communities.
