Abstract: In Nigeria, family health expenditure is increasingly becoming the main source of health financing, although the government has launched a number of social health plan policies to cover the health costs of patients. In recognition of these limitations, this study assessed the types of medical services commonly used by residents in six rural communities in central and northern Nigeria in various diseases and the socio demographic factors related to the preferred medical services of household heads. Using a community-based cross-sectional descriptive research design and multi-stage sampling method, 154 heads of households in residential areas were studied. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate independent predictors with significant chi square test in the following cases:. lead causes of illness experienced by respondents were medical conditions (42.0 ) and 41.7 of them sought treatment from patent medicine vendors. The dominant reasons for health-seeking preferences were financial access (53.7 ) and proximity (48.6 ). Age had a higher impact (Beta = 0.892) on the health-seeking preferences of the respondents as compared to their occupation and religion (Beta = 0.368 and −0.746, resp.). Therefore, in order to meet the health care of patients, it is pertinent that the unmet needs of patients are properly addressed by appropriate agencies.
