Collagen biomimetic apatite electrospun nanofibers on titanium alloy surface

Abstract: Titanium and its alloys have excellent mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. They are the main materials for orthopaedic implants. Although these materials are bioinert, their biological properties (e.g., bone implant contact) can be improved by applying materials that mimic the extracellular matrix of bone. Therefore, this study describes a new method to prepare nanostructured collagen apatite composites on titanium alloy substrate by electrospinning and biomimetic mineralization. The characterization results showed that the mineralized scaffolds had similar morphological, structural and chemical characteristics to natural bone extracellular matrix. Finally, the topographic distribution of chemical substances is analyzedcal composition in the mineralized matrix evaluated by Fourier Transform Infrared microspectroscopy demonstrated that the apatite nanocrystals cover the collagen fibers assembled by the electrospinning.
