Comparison between chemically synthesized magnetite nanoparticles and biosynthetic magnetite

Abstract: Fe3O4 was prepared from ferrous salt in alkaline aqueous solution at different temperatures by air. Synthetic magnetite has different particle size distribution. The properties of magnetite prepared by chemical method were studied and compared with magnetotactic bacterial nanoparticles. The results show that the grain size, morphology and particle size distribution of chemically prepared magnetite are similar to the biosynthesis of magnetite at 293 ℃. The newly prepared Fe3O4 is helpful to explain the formation mechanism of magnetosomes in magnetotactic bacteria. The products were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (IR), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM).
