Electrophoretic deposition of carbon nanotubes on TiO2 nanotubes: evaluation of surface properties and biocompatibility

Abstract: Titanium (TI) is often used as orthopedic and dental implant materials because of its good mechanical properties, corrosion resistance and good biocompatibility. The formation of TiO2 nanotubes (TiO2 NTS) on the surface of titanium is an interesting surface modification method, which can realize drug controlled release and promote cell growth. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have excellent chemical durability and mechanical strength. In recent years, the application of carbon nanotubes in biomedical scaffolds has attracted extensive attention. The purpose of this study is to modify the surface of titanium by anodic oxidation to form TiO2 nts, and then deposit CNT on it by electrophoretic deposition (EPD). The properties, biocompatibility and apatite forming ability of the surface modified samples were evaluated. rsults of the study reveal that CNTs coating on TiO2 nanotubes help improve the biological activity and this type of surface modification is highly suitable for biomedical applications.
