Synthesis, spectral characterization and biological evaluation of bidentate n, O Schiff base transition metal complexes

Abstract: Three new series of bidentate n, O donor Schiff bases (L1) - (L3) were prepared by the reaction of ethylene-1,2-diamine with 5-methylfurfural, 2-anisaldehyde and 2-hydroxybenzaldehyde. These ligands are further complexed with CO (II), Cu (II), Ni (II) and Zn (II) metals to form new metal complexes with octahedral geometry. These compounds were characterized by physical, spectral and analytical data. The elemental analysis and spectral data of uncomplicated ligands and their metal (II) complexes are consistent with their structures, indicating that the purity of all compounds is very high. All ligands and their metal complexes were screened for antibacterial activity. The antibacterial activity test showed that the metal complex hae significantly higher activity than corresponding ligands. This higher activity might be due to chelation process which reduces the polarity of metal ion by coordinating with ligands.
