Synthesis of antibacterial agent silver abietic acid for textiles

Abstract: In this study, the potential use of new silver abietic acid extracted from abietic acid as antibacterial agent for textiles was discussed. The synthesis, structure and antibacterial activity of silver abietic acid were reported. Rosin acid reacts with silver to obtain silver complex. The new compounds were characterized by 1H NMR, 13C NMR, Dept, IR, UV and ESI-MS techniques, which supported the proposed structure. The new silver abietic acid complex has no environmental harm. According to JIS L 1902-2008 agar diffusion test method, it is applied to cotton fabric through filling process, and the antibacterial activities of three Gram-negative bacteria and three Gram-positive bacteria are evaluated respectively. Stability of antibacterial effect after repeated washing (3, 5, 10 and 20) ws also tested which indicated that the synthesized silver abietate compound could be used as a new antibacterial agent in textile industry. In this way, the compound has been synthesized the first time in the literature and the applications have been investigated.
