Abstract: A series of DNA double helices contain different numbers of silver (I) - mediated base pairs, involving artificial nuclear base imidazole or 2-methylimidazole, which have been used to generate DNA template silver nanoclusters. The original silver containing nucleic acids and the resulting nanoclusters and nanoparticles were characterized by UV visible spectroscopy, circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results show for the first time that metal mediated base pairs can be used for the template growth of metal nanoclusters.
