Abstract: Although nanoparticles (NPS) have made incredible progress in the field of nanotechnology and biomedical research, especially in the past few decades, the whole industrial world needs their applications, people know little about the fate of nanoparticles in ecosystems. With regard to the biosafety of nanotechnology, nanotoxicity will be the second primary problem to be properly solved in nanotechnology. This review covers the chemical and biological problems of nanoparticles, especially titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles, and emphasizes the toxicological characteristics of TiO2 at the molecular level in vitro and in vivo. In addition, the challenges and future prospects of nano toxicology are also discussed, which may provide better understanding and new insights into ongoing and future research in this field.
