Application progress of nano zinc oxide in biomedicine

Abstract: Zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are used in more and more industrial products, such as rubber, paint, coating and cosmetics. In the past two decades, ZnO nanoparticles have become one of the most popular metal oxide nanoparticles in biological applications because of their good biocompatibility, economy and low toxicity. Zinc oxide nanoparticles show great potential in biomedical field, especially in anti-cancer and antibacterial field. They have the strong ability to trigger the production of excess reactive oxygen species (ROS), release zinc ions and induce apoptosis. In addition, it is well known that zinc can maintain the structural integrity of insulin. Therefore, Zinc Oxide nanoparticles have also been effectively developed for the treatment of diabetes. In addition, ZnO nanoparticles also exhibit excellent luminescence propertiest properties and have turned them into one of the main candidates for bioimaging. Here, we summarize the synthesis and recent advances of ZnO NPs in the biomedical fields, which will be helpful for facilitating their future research progress and focusing on biomedical fields.
