Abstract: Carbon monoxide (CO) has long been known as a "silent killer " because it can form carboxyhemoglobin, which is the main cause of human CO poisoning. However, its role as an endogenous neurotransmitter was proposed in the early 1990s. Since then, the biological activity of CO has been widely studied through direct administration and in the form of so-called "carbon monoxide releasing molecules (corms) ". This review will explore the general physiological effects and potential therapeutic applications of CO when administered in the form of corms.
