Controlled release of curcumin in hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose (HPMC) Co spray drying materials

Abstract: In order to achieve controlled release of curcumin, HPMC (hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose) was spray dried with curcumin and lactose. The spray dried material was compressed into a tablet of 8 in diameter and its release characteristics in vitro were measured. In vitro experiments showed that due to the sustained-release characteristics of HPMC as a typical excipient, the release of curcumin in HPMC mixture was significantly slower. The release curve of curcumin in HPMC mixture is relatively stable and can be used to control the release. SEM images showed that the surface of the HPMC spray dried powder was wrinkled due to the large molecular weight of HPMC. The DSC, XRD, FTIR, N2 adsorption and TGA tests of spray drying curcumin were carried out. This work shows that HPMC can used as a controlled-release excipient for curcumin preparations.
