Abstract: Due to the hydrophilic state of amino acid side chain of protein surface water, the concept of channel chreodes was proposed. These chreodes promote and guide the diffusion of neurotransmitters through surface water to protein receptors or active sites. This chreode system is susceptible to other molecules that may encounter the chreode system. This encounter and destruction is proposed to explain the mechanism of general anesthesia. Based on a large amount of recent evidence that there are similarities between volatile anesthetic anesthesia and sleep, a similar sleep mechanism has been proposed. Because it must be an exogenous substance to be comparable with general anesthesia, it is prposed that this exogenous, sleep-producing substance is elemental nitrogen. Recent evidence supports these hypotheses.
