Effect of pore size distribution on suction characteristics of calcareous stones in cultural heritage: experimental data and model prediction

Abstract: Water absorption symbolizes an important characteristic of porous building materials. The entry of water into the microstructure leads to the deterioration of different types of materials, resulting in the deterioration of indoor comfort. In this case, experimental adsorption tests are incompatible because they require a large number of materials to statistically verify the results. For these reasons, it will be very useful to develop analytical procedures to indirectly evaluate adsorption from MIP data. In this work, a hybrid fractal unit model is proposed to evaluate the adsorption coefficient of calcareous stones, which is mainly used in the historical buildings in Cagliari, Sardinia. The results are compared with the experimental resultsmental data as well as with other two models found in the literature. IFU model better fits experimental data than the other two models, and it represents an important tool for estimating service life of porous building materials.
