Abstract: In this paper, the effect of matrix yield criterion on fiber brittle fracture of continuous fiber reinforced metal matrix composites stretched parallel to the fiber direction is studied. It is assumed that the matrix obeys a fairly general isotropic yield criterion. The approximate method for predicting the tensile load during fiber fracture previously proposed in the literature is used. The results show that the tensile load is actually independent of the yield criterion of the matrix. This is a great advantage for engineering applications because analytical solutions can be used in the case of Tresca yield criterion. This solution can be used for a wide range of matrix materials without losing the accuracy of predicting tensile loads in this casethe fibre breaks.
