Experimental study on properties of concrete mixed with iron tailings

Abstract: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the modification performance of concrete mixed with iron ore tailings, so as to solve the shortage of natural sand and make full use of industrial waste. Firstly, the mixing raw materials were analyzed and the test ratio was determined. Secondly, the workability and mechanical properties of different amounts of iron tailings instead of concrete specimens were tested. The results show that it is the best to replace 35 of natural aggregate with iron tailings. Finally, the impermeability, frost resistance and carbonation resistance of concrete specimens mixed with an appropriate amount of iron tailings are tested. The compressive properties of the samples after the durability test were measured. Changes in mechanicsl properties of the specimens was obtained after seepage, freezing-thawing, and carbonation. Findings showed that the performance of the concrete with 35 replacement of iron ore tailings is basically equivalent to that of natural sand concrete. Hence, it can be utilized in engineering applications.
