Prediction model of shale compressive strength based on dimension analysis

Abstract: Shale compressive strength is a comprehensive index to evaluate shale strength, which is closely related to shale wellbore stability. Based on relevant analysis factors (confining pressure, aspect ratio, bedding angle and porosity) and shale compressive strength (Longmaxi shale in Sichuan Basin, China), we developed a shale compressive strength prediction model based on dimensional analysis. Nonlinear regression model was used for comparison. Multi training method is used to realize the reliability of model prediction. The results show that compared with the multiple nonlinear regression model (average prediction error = 19.5 ), the average prediction error of the model based on dimensional analysis is 19.2 . More importantly, our model based on dimensional analysis needsrmine only one parameter, whereas the multi-nonlinear-regression model needs to determine five. In addition, sensitivity analysis shows that height diameter ratio has greater sensitivity to compressive strength than other factors.
