Abstract: Aluminum scum is an industrial waste produced by aluminum refining industry, which belongs to toxic substances. However, due to the negative impact of scum on ecosystem, surface water and groundwater, the treatment of scum as waste is a burden for aluminum manufacturing industry. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) on the surface area and pore size of aluminum scum. The treatment activity is divided into three stages, namely leaching, precipitation and calcination. The best result of this study was that the surface area of aluminum scum increased from 10.1 to 10.1   m2 g to 80.0   m2 g at 40 ° C, 1 NaOH and 15 minutes reaction time. Therefore, aluminum scum may be transformed into other useful materials, such as catalysts and absorbentst. The benefit of this research is that the hazardous industrial waste can be turned into wealth to be used in other applications such as in catalytic activities and absorber in waste water treatment. Further investigation on the physicochemical of aluminium dross with different acid or alkali should be conducted to get deeper understanding on the aluminium dross as a catalyst-type material.
