Properties of sago particleboard modified by urea formaldehyde resin and phenolic resin

Abstract: Sago processing industry in muka, Sarawak produced a large amount of sago waste after grinding, which has been used for composite materials by scientists. In this study, sago residue was mixed with phenolic resin (PF) and urea formaldehyde resin (UF) to make particleboard. The manufacturing and testing methods are based on JIS A 5908 standard. Under the condition of target density of 600, sago particles were used to prepare single-layer particleboard   kg m3. 90 , 85 and 80 particles by weight and two different substrates were used in the manufacturing process. The results show that the samples with different mass fraction and matrix have a great influence on the mechanical properties of the material, such as MOR, MOE, Young s modulus, tensile strength, impact strength, spiral T and so onst, and internal bonding. The sago UF PF particleboard only displays single stage decomposition. All the panels underwent physical tests which are water absorption and thickness swelling. The combination of sago particles with UF PF can be utilized for general indoor application purposes such as furniture manufacturing. Sago particleboard made by UF PF provided the advantages like optimized performance, minimized weight and volume, cost effectiveness, chemical resistance, and resistance to biodegradation.
