Molding properties of Inconel 718 raw materials for low pressure powder injection molding

Abstract: The effects of binder and temperature on the rheological properties of low pressure powder injection molding raw materials were studied. Different raw material formulations were tested by mixing Inconel 718 powder with wax based binder system. The dependence of shear rate and temperature on raw material viscosity was studied by shear rate sensitivity index and activation energy. Then, the injection performance of raw materials was evaluated by analytical plasticity model. The results show that the viscosity distribution of raw materials mainly depends on the binder component, and the secondary binder component plays an important role in the rheological behavior (pseudoplastic or near Newtonian) of Fedstock formulations. Viscosity values as low as 0.06 to 2.9 Pa·s were measured at high shear rates and high temperatures. The results indicate that a feedstock containing a surfactant agent exhibits the best moldability characteristics.
