Bias magnetic field of laminated giant magnetostrictive actuator: design, analysis and optimization

Abstract: Many new applications using giant magnetostrictive actuators (GMA) require that the bidirectional stroke output of the actuator is large enough to drive the load. In these cases, the complex method of forming a sufficient bias field with minimum power and volume consumption should be considered in the main stage of GMA design. In this paper, a special design method of GMA bias field with superimposed PMS and GMMs (sgma) is discussed: the loop model and field model of GMA bias field are established; The optimization method of given sgma structure is summarized; In order to verify the theory, a prototype is made. The simulation and test results show that the bias field can be applied more easily with sgma structure; The modeling and optimization method of sgma is effective in practical engineeringsign.
