Field test on grouting reinforcement of water rich sand gravel foundation in floodplain

Abstract: For tunnels excavated in unstable strata, the performance of foundation treatment has always been very important. The old Dongnan road Xiangjiang tunnel across the Xiangjiang River (Changsha, China) will be built on the gravel ground with loose structure, large porosity, high sensitivity, poor stability and high groundwater level. Infiltration grouting will be used to improve the bearing capacity and alleviate the entry of groundwater into the excavation. In order to find the appropriate grouting parameters and methods, the field test of vertical grouting was carried out in the sand gravel layer of floodplain. A series of tests were carried out on grouting materials, drilling grouting sequence, injection pressure and grouting volume to improve the sandravel mass strength and reduce water permeability. The examination of the results obtained during water pressure testing and core drilling on completion of the grouting trial successfully demonstrated that the specified injection criteria had led to an expected effect. Grouting control method of this saturated sandy gravel stratum was concluded after the test, which would contribute to the future pregrouting work during the tunnelling.
