Relationship between web defects and shear buckling resistance of section damage caused by corrosion

Abstract: In this paper, the relationship between the defects of web section damage caused by corrosion and the shear buckling resistance is studied. In order to study the effect of defects on the shear buckling resistance of section damaged webs, a series of nonlinear finite element analyses of section damaged webs assumed to be local corrosion damage were carried out. In order to consider the defects of the main beam web, the initial out of plane deformation is introduced into the finite element analysis model. Based on the results of finite element analysis, the changes of shear buckling resistance of web section after damage are quantitatively checked and summarized according to the length width ratio, boundary conditions and the height of damaged sectionte. The effects of web imperfections on the shear buckling resistance were evaluated to be little compared to that of the web plate without sectional damage. The shear buckling resistance was shown to significantly change in the high-aspect-ratio web plate. A simple evaluation equation for the shear buckling resistance of a web plate with sectional damage was modified for use in the practical maintenance of a web plate in corrosive environments.
