Application of fly ash in soil erosion control of coal mine in Indonesia: utilization of fly ash and bottom ash

Abstract: With the increase of coal production and consumption, the number of coal-fired power plants is also increasing, which leads to the treatment of a large amount of coal ash in Indonesia. In the past research, coal ash was used in postal sites in order to improve soil conditions and promote plant growth; However, heavy rain in tropical climate may cause soil erosion with the change of soil conditions. In this study, the effect of fly ash on soil erosion in postal land was studied through artificial rainfall test and physical test. The results show that the risk of soil erosion can be significantly reduced by applying fly ash with a sand content of more than 85 at a mixing ratio of more than 30 . supplemently, they reveal that not only fine fractions but also microporous structures in coal ash enhance water retention capacity by retaining water in the structure, leading to the prevention of soil erosion. Thus, the risk of soil erosion can be reduced by applying coal ash to topsoil in consideration of soil composition and microporous structure of coal ash.
