Abstract: The effect of interface on the morphology of flat spherulites of isotactic polystyrene (IPS) grown on liquid substrate was studied. Amorphous IPS films cast rotationally from solution were annealed on glycerol and silicone oil (non solvent of IPS) for cold crystallization. The number density of spherulites grown on glycerol matrix is higher than that on silicone oil matrix. This means that the primary nucleation rate at the IPS glycerol interface is greater than that at the IPS silicone oil interface. This result may be consistent with previous studies on the molecular interaction between random polystyrene and non solvents at the interface. In some cases, holes will be formed in the film during cold extrusiontallization due to dewetting, which also significantly affect the spherulite morphology via, for example, transcrystallization.
