Experimental study on water induced strength reduction of Zigong argillaceous siltstone with different weathering degrees

Abstract: The water softening characteristic of soft rock is a key problem in geotechnical engineering. Taking the typical red bed soft rock (Zigong argillaceous siltstone) with different weathering degrees as an example, the water softening characteristics and the influence of weathering degree are studied. Through a series of mechanical and microstructure tests, the weathering characteristics and weathering mechanism of Zigong argillaceous siltstone are analyzed. The mechanical test results show that the water content and weathering degree of rock samples weaken the compressive strength and shear strength. According to the existing microstructure test results, the mechanical properties of Zigong argillaceous siltstone are closely related to its physical propertiesoperties, including internal microstructure and material composition for highly weathered rocks or moderately weathered rocks (in both natural and saturation conditions). Finally, experimental results indicate that the changes of microstructure and internal materials are two main factors that influence rock strength parameters after contacting with water and that these properties reflect the rock weathering degree. In a word, when red-bed soft rocks are encountered in geotechnical engineering, special attention should be paid to presence of water.
