Experimental study on properties and microstructure of sand dune cementitious material

Abstract: This paper introduces the research results of producing cementitious materials by using dune sand as the main raw material in channel regulation project. The mechanical properties and durability of the cementitious material were studied. In addition, the microstructure of the samples was identified by scanning electron microscope (SEM) and mercury injection instrument (MIP). The results show that the addition of ground blast furnace slag (GGBS) can improve the compressive strength and splitting tensile strength of cementitious materials, which is mainly due to better particle size distribution and pozzolanic effect. Samples with appropriate cement, GGB and gypsum showed lower D valuesy shrinkage and excellent abrasion resistance. Correspondingly the specimens present a lower porosity and total volume of pores at different curing ages. The SEM observation indicates that there are quite a lot of hydrate products such as calcium silicate hydrate gel in the matrix which verifies the formation of cementitious compounds. The results obtained suggest that there is potential in manufacturing cementitious material with dune sand in substitution of ordinary concrete to use in hydraulic engineering.
