Electromagnetic stirring and ECAP: morphology comparison of microstructure refinement of Al Si Cu alloy for SSM processing

Abstract: In this work, the morphology evolution of al-4.0wt si-2.5wt Cu alloy produced by direct cold casting under electromagnetic stirring (EMS) and one equal channel angular extrusion (ECAP) in semi-solid state was evaluated. ECAP is a promising technology, which can reduce and uniform metal microstructure. Large deformation occurs in a matrix containing two channels with the same cross-sectional area and forming a 120 ° angle. When the treatment time is 0, 30 and 90, the material is reheated under the condition of 60 solid fraction   S. comparing the two cases, the ECAP process proposed by us has a good response to the recovery and recrystallization mechanism, and produces an ideal thixoforming to refine the microstructure. Pimary particle sizes of about 45 μm and grain sizes of about 75 μm and a circularity shape factor of more than 0.60 were obtained. The low silicon alloy, Al-4.0wt Si-2.5wt Cu, presented excellent refinement when processed via equal channel angular pressing, presenting good morphological stability at the semisolid state, without significant changes in size or shape of the solid particles. This fully globular structure is favourable for thixoforming processes.
