Abstract: Transformer is a very expensive equipment, which is very important for the normal operation of the whole power system. The failure of these equipment may make them unusable and cause serious economic losses. The service life of transformer can be effectively determined by the service life of insulating paper. In the present work, we demonstrate an alternative diagnostic technique to determine the aging state of transformer paper by using FTIR spectroscopy and empirical models. The advantage of this method is the use of trace samples that can be extracted from the transformer site. The proposed technique provides an approximate quantitative evaluation of the polymerization degree of dielectric paper, and can be used for transformer diagnosis and residual life estimation.
