Carbon nanotubes in cement-based composites: dispersion, implementation and effects on mechanical properties

Abstract: In order to make effective use of nanoparticles in cement-based composites, they must be completely dispersed. Appropriate ultrasonic energy (US energy) and the use of appropriate and compatible surfactants are the prerequisites for the proper de coagulation of carbon nanotubes (CNTs). American energy is provided by bandelin sonopuls HD 3200 ultrasonic homogenizer. The effect of us energy on the dispersion of CNT in aqueous medium is monitored in two steps: firstly, it is roughly monitored by optical microscope, and then the absorbance is measured by UV visible spectrophotometry for accurate monitoring. After finding the appropriate ultrasonic energy, the cement mortar containing carbon nanotubes was prepared and tested. The physical and mechanical properties were examined and compared with the reference spcimens.
