Passivation and semiconducting behavior of high nitrogen stainless steel in acidic NaCl solution

Abstract: Passivation and semiconducting behavior of high nitrogen nickel free stainless steel (HNSS) at 0.05 ℃ were studied with mol L H2SO4 + 0.5 mol L NaCl. The results show that HNS has excellent pitting corrosion resistance in corrosive environment. Three corrosion potential values were observed in the potentiodynamic polarization response, indicating the existence of unstable system. The current transient curve and Mott Schottky curve show that the stability of passive film decreases with the increase of applied potential. The results of angle resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy show that the main components of the passive film are formed in 0.05   mol L H2SO4 + 0.5   mol L NaCl solution, and are composed of iron oxide, manganese oxide, Cr2O3 and Cr (OH) 3. meanwhile, it indicated that molybdenum oxides did not exist in the oxide layer, but chloride ions were present in the passive films.
