Effect of improved pin shape and process parameters on friction stir welding of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy

Abstract: Compared with the traditional pin profile, this paper studies the effect of a new "bolt head " pin profile on the friction stir welding properties of 6061-T6 aluminum alloy. The process parameters of friction stir welding, such as tool speed, welding speed and different shape of stirring pin, are studied; The results show that the new "bolt head " pin profile makes the welded specimens have better mechanical properties. The pin profiles used in this work are straight square (SS), straight hexagonal (SH), conical cylindrical (TC) and straight hexagonal "bolt head " (shbh). The results show that the last pin profile improves the material flow behavior and the uniform distribution of plastic deformation, and reduces the formation of macro defects in the welding area. Mobileensile tests on welded specimens were performed to determine the tensile strength: the specimens welded with the SHBH pin profile have shown the highest mechanical properties. An approach is presented for material flow on this aluminum alloy using the SHBH pin profile, which is related to the improvement on the resulting mechanical properties.
