Development of modular and efficient steel beam section based on Six Sigma

Abstract: In this study, a systematic method for the development of effective modular steel beam section based on Six Sigma is proposed. Although six sigma is often implemented in manufacturing and other service industries, it is a relatively new concept in the field of architectural design and construction. As the first step of this method, conduct market research and survey to obtain the opinions of potential customers. Then, the quality function deployment method is used to transform the customer s opinions into the quality characteristics of steel beams. The steel hollow flange channel steel is selected as the main module beam shape, and the design concept is deduced and developed by using Pugh matrix method. Preliminary experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the methods of the developed beam section. The results indicated that the developed channel beam section showed excellent performance and retained high accuracy in fabrication, thus resulting in a significant reduction of steel consumption.
